**The easiest way in is to drive south from Nogales, Arizona on Federal Highway 15 — about 400 km and four and a half hours — and because of Sonora's *Only Sonora* programme you do not need a Banjercito vehicle import permit.** That single administrative difference makes this a far simpler drive than heading into Chihuahua or mainland Mexico.

## Driving from the US

FromDistance to San CarlosApprox. drive time
Nogales, AZ (border)~400 km4.5 hrs
Tucson, AZ~510 km6 hrs
Phoenix, AZ~690 km8 hrs
Yuma, AZ~800 km9 hrs
Hermosillo (HMO airport)~135 km1.5 hrs
Guaymas (from San Carlos)~20 km20 min

The route is straightforward: cross at Nogales, take the Mexico 15 toll road (*cuota*) south through Magdalena, Santa Ana and Hermosillo, then continue to the Guaymas / San Carlos exits. Take the toll road, not the free road. Drive it in daylight, which for most people means crossing at Nogales in the morning and arriving mid-afternoon.

## The paperwork — and why it is easier here

- **Passport** (or passport card for land crossings) to re-enter the United States.

- **FMM tourist card.** Required for stays beyond the immediate border zone. Get it at the crossing or online, keep the stamped copy, and hand it back when you exit.

- **No vehicle import permit.** This is the big one. Sonora's *Only Sonora* programme lets you drive a foreign-plated vehicle within the state without a Banjercito TIP, provided you enter at a participating crossing and stay in Sonora. No deposit, no permit office queue. Compare that with [driving into Chihuahua](/how-to-get-to-chihuahua-from-the-us-for-dental-work/), where a TIP with a refundable deposit is mandatory.

- **Mexican auto insurance.** Still required. US and Canadian policies do not provide liability coverage in Mexico. Buy a policy for your travel dates.

- **Vehicle registration in your name**, plus a permission letter if the vehicle is financed. Most US rental agreements prohibit taking the car into Mexico — read the contract.

Rules and participating crossings can change, so confirm the current Only Sonora requirements before you travel. But as of now this is the least bureaucratic drive into mainland Mexico available to an American patient.

## Flying instead

Fly into **Hermosillo (HMO)**, which has the best service in the state, then drive or transfer 90 minutes south. Guaymas has a small airport with limited scheduled service, so most flying patients route through Hermosillo. Flying makes sense if you are coming from outside the Southwest, if you would rather not drive after surgery, or if you are doing a short focused trip rather than a season.

## Once you are here: the 20-minute rule

You will almost certainly stay in **San Carlos** and be treated in **Guaymas**, because 72 of the 79 clinics we track are in Guaymas and only 7 are in San Carlos. The drive is about 20 minutes on Highway 15 / Boulevard Manlio Fabio Beltrones, and it is an easy, well-travelled run.

Practical notes for scheduling around it:

- **Book morning appointments** so the drive back is in daylight and you avoid the afternoon heat.

- **After surgery, consider one night in Guaymas** rather than driving back sedated or freshly operated.

- **Have a driver for sedation days.** You cannot drive yourself after IV sedation, and there is no substitute for arranging this in advance.

- **Bring pesos or a card.** Guaymas clinics price in pesos; San Carlos clinics generally take dollars but the built-in exchange rate rarely favours you.

## When to come

October through May. Summer here is very hot and humid, and hurricane season runs roughly June to November. The winter months are when the snowbird community arrives, which is also when clinics get busiest with foreign patients — book ahead if you are coming in January or February.

That seasonal window matters clinically as well as comfortably: it is long enough to complete a two-stage implant case without a second trip. See our [implant cost and timeline breakdown](/dental-implants-cost-in-guaymas-san-carlos/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a vehicle permit to drive to San Carlos?

No. Sonora's Only Sonora programme allows foreign-plated vehicles within the state without a Banjercito temporary import permit, provided you enter at a participating crossing and stay in Sonora. Confirm current requirements before travelling.

### How long is the drive from Nogales to San Carlos?

About 400 km and roughly four and a half hours on the Mexico 15 toll road, passing through Hermosillo.

### Can I fly to San Carlos?

Most patients fly into Hermosillo (HMO) and drive or transfer 90 minutes south. Guaymas has a small airport with limited scheduled service.

### How far is Guaymas from San Carlos?

About 20 kilometres, or 20 minutes by car on Highway 15. Most visiting patients stay in San Carlos and drive to Guaymas for appointments.

### Do I still need Mexican car insurance?

Yes. Even without a vehicle import permit, US and Canadian auto policies do not provide liability coverage in Mexico, and Mexican liability insurance is legally required.
