The short answer
Fly into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), which has nonstop flights from many US and Canadian cities. Plan about a week for crowns, veneers or root canals, and two trips of roughly a week each, three to six months apart, for implants or All-on-4. Stay near your clinic, usually in Bávaro or Punta Cana village, at least for the treatment days. Do the dental work at the start of the trip and leave the beach for the end. Check the entry requirements for your passport and your government's travel advisory before you book.
Getting there
PUJ is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean. Nonstop flights come from many cities on the US East Coast and in the Midwest and from several Canadian cities, with more frequencies in the winter season. From the western US and Canada you usually connect once. If you find a better fare into Santo Domingo's Las Américas airport (SDQ), remember that the drive east to Punta Cana takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.
From PUJ, Bávaro is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road and Cap Cana a little less. Book a transfer in advance through your hotel or the clinic, or use the official taxi rank. Distances along the coast are long, and there is no practical public transport for visitors, so budget for taxis between your hotel and the clinic.
How many trips and days
| Treatment | Trips | Days on the ground | Punta Cana estimate (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning and whitening | 1 | 1 – 2 | $40 – $80 / $150 – $300 |
| Crowns, root canals | 1 | 5 – 7 | $300 – $500 per crown |
| Porcelain veneers | 1 | 6 – 8 | $300 – $550 per tooth |
| Single implants | 2 | 4 – 5, then 5 – 7 | $900 – $1,500 per implant |
| All-on-4 | 2 | 6 – 8, then 6 – 8 | $8,000 – $12,000 per arch |
City-level estimates, not a clinic quote. Your own plan depends on your case, so get the number of visits in writing before you buy a flight.
Where to stay
Bávaro has the widest range of hotels, from large all-inclusive resorts to apartments and small hotels near the Cortecito and Los Corales beach areas, and it is close to many clinics. Punta Cana village, near the airport, is quieter and has good restaurants and apartments. Cap Cana is upscale and gated, pleasant but far from most clinics. Uvero Alto and Macao, to the north, have big resorts but can be close to an hour from a clinic. For surgical trips, a hotel or apartment within a short taxi ride of the clinic, with a kitchen or easy access to soft food, is more useful than a remote all-inclusive. On a second, restorative trip, a resort makes more sense.
The beach after treatment
The beach is the reason many people choose Punta Cana, but surgery and the beach do not mix in the first days. After extractions or implant placement, dentists usually ask patients to avoid swimming in the sea or a pool, alcohol, smoking, hot sun and heavy exercise for a short period, and to eat soft, cool food. Follow your own dentist's written instructions. The simple rule is to schedule the dental work at the start of the trip and the beach at the end, with at least one spare day before your flight home in case something needs adjusting.
Combining treatment with the island
Once the dental work allows it, the area has plenty to do. The beaches of Bávaro and Macao are the obvious draw. Cap Cana has the Hoyo Azul cenote in a nature park. Higüey, about 45 minutes inland, has the modern Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia, an important pilgrimage site. Day trips run to Saona Island, usually by boat from Bayahibe, and to Altos de Chavón, a replica Mediterranean village above the Chavón river near La Romana. Leave boat trips, snorkelling and diving until your dentist clears you, especially after surgery.
Documents and money
- A passport valid for the whole stay. The Dominican Republic uses an electronic entry and exit form; check the current requirements for your passport on official government sites before you fly.
- The currency is the Dominican peso (DOP). In the resort area US dollars and cards are widely accepted, and many clinics quote in dollars. Tell your bank you are travelling.
- Bring copies of recent X-rays, a list of medications and allergies, and your medical history in writing.
- Buy travel insurance that covers trip interruption; most policies exclude planned dental treatment itself.
When to go
December to April is the drier, busier season, with higher hotel and flight prices. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest risk usually from August to October. If you travel then, keep dates flexible, check forecasts, and avoid scheduling surgery right before your flight home.
Punta Cana or Santo Domingo?
We would rather say this plainly than have you find out later. Punta Cana is a resort area, and its dental market is smaller than the one in Santo Domingo, the capital, which is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours away by road. The capital has more clinics, more specialists and more labs. For routine work, such as crowns, veneers, root canals or a few straightforward implants, a well-run clinic in Bávaro or Punta Cana village is a sensible choice and lets you recover by the sea. For complex surgery, such as major bone grafting, full-arch cases with little bone or zygomatic implants, ask who will operate and where. Some Punta Cana clinics bring in a visiting surgeon or refer patients to Santo Domingo, and it is better to know that before you buy a flight.
Safety and practical sense
The resort strip from Cap Cana to Bávaro is built around tourism, and most visitors move between the airport, their hotel, the beach and a few restaurants without trouble. Read your government's current travel advisory for the Dominican Republic before you book, and follow the ordinary rules: use registered taxis or transport arranged by your hotel or clinic, keep valuables out of sight, do not carry large amounts of cash to an appointment, and drink bottled water, which most clinics and hotels provide anyway.

Frequently asked questions
How far is the airport from Bávaro?
Roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road, depending on traffic and exactly where you are going.
How long should I stay for veneers?
About a week, including a spare day before your flight home.
Should I stay at an all-inclusive resort during treatment?
For surgical trips, a hotel close to the clinic is usually more practical. A resort works well for a restorative trip with fewer restrictions.
Can I fly into Santo Domingo instead?
Yes, but the road trip east to Punta Cana takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, so factor that in.
Do I need a visa?
It depends on your passport. Check the current Dominican entry requirements on official government sites before booking.
