The short answer
Check visa or e-visa requirements for your passport first, then fly into Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), about 7 km from District 1, and stay near your clinic. Plan a couple of days for simple work, about a week for crowns or veneers and two trips a few months apart for implants or All-on-4. Read your government's travel advice before booking.
Visas and entry
Vietnam's entry rules depend on your nationality. Some passports are exempt from a visa for short stays, and many travellers apply for an electronic visa through Vietnam's official government portal before flying. The rules have changed several times in recent years, so check the current requirements for your passport on official sources before you book. Use only the official portal: look-alike agency websites charge extra for the same e-visa. If your treatment needs two trips, check the rules for both.
Getting to Ho Chi Minh City
- From Australia. Direct flights operate from several major Australian cities, roughly 8 to 9 hours from the east coast and less from Perth.
- From New Zealand. Usually one connection, often through an Australian or Asian hub.
- From the UK. Typically one connection through the Gulf or an Asian hub.
- From the Gulf. Gulf hubs connect directly.
- From the US. One connection, usually through an Asian hub.
- From Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. Regional flights take under two hours, which makes it easy to combine cities or get a second opinion.
Schedules change; check current routes when you plan.
From the airport
Tan Son Nhat sits inside the city, roughly 7 km north of District 1. A taxi or ride-hailing car takes roughly 20 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, longer at rush hour or in a downpour. Use the official taxi queue or a ride-hailing app rather than accepting offers inside the terminal. Some clinics arrange airport pick-ups; ask when you book.

Where to stay
District 1
The historic centre: Ben Thanh Market, Nguyen Hue walking street, the Opera House, the Central Post Office and the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which has been under restoration in recent years. Many clinics serving foreign patients are here, along with hotels at every level. Busy and convenient.
District 3
Just west of District 1, with tree-lined streets, French-era villas, local food and a cluster of dental clinics. Slightly calmer and often better value.
Thao Dien
Across the Saigon River in Thu Duc City, Thao Dien is the expatriate quarter, with cafés, international restaurants and serviced apartments. Quieter and greener, though a ride from the centre.
Serviced apartments
For stays of a week or more, an apartment with a kitchen makes the soft-food days easier. They are widely available in all three areas.
Getting around
Ride-hailing apps, for cars and motorbikes, are the easiest way to get around and show the price upfront. Metered taxis from reputable companies are also fine. The city's first metro line opened recently and runs east from the centre, though for most patients a car is still the practical choice. After treatment, stick to cars rather than motorbike taxis. Walking in District 1 is pleasant in the morning and evening; crossing streets takes a slow, steady pace.
Weather
Saigon is hot all year. The dry season, roughly December to April, is the most comfortable, with March and April the hottest months. From about May to November the rainy season brings short, heavy afternoon downpours that can flood streets briefly and snarl traffic. Clinics work normally all year; just leave extra time for appointments on wet afternoons. The Lunar New Year (Tet), in late January or February, is the one period to plan around: many businesses close for days and travel is busy.
Between appointments
Gentle options for recovery days include the War Remnants Museum, the Reunification Palace, the Fine Arts Museum, the Central Post Office and an evening on Nguyen Hue walking street. Save the bigger outings for before surgery or the second trip: the Cu Chi tunnels, roughly an hour and a half to two hours by road, a day on the Mekong Delta, or a short flight to Phu Quoc island or the central coast if you have weeks between implant visits.
Money and connectivity
Vietnam's currency is the dong (VND). Cards are accepted at most clinics and hotels; cash is used in markets and street-food stalls. Ask whether your clinic quotes in dong or US dollars and whether card payments carry a fee. A local SIM or eSIM is cheap and makes ride-hailing, maps and messaging your clinic simple.
Safety and practicalities
Ho Chi Minh City is a friendly, busy city and most visitors have no serious problems. The best-known risk is phone and bag snatching by thieves on motorbikes, so keep your phone away from the kerb side, carry bags across your body and be discreet with valuables. Traffic is the other everyday hazard: cross streets at a slow, steady pace so riders can flow around you, and use ride-hailing apps or reputable metered taxis rather than unmarked cars. Before you book, read your own government's official travel advice for Vietnam: Smartraveller for Australians, SafeTravel for New Zealanders, the FCDO for UK travellers and the State Department for Americans. Check whether your travel insurance covers complications from elective treatment, because many policies exclude it.
How Molar City fits in
Molar City is an independent dental-tourism platform, not a clinic. We have guided patients since 2007, starting in Los Algodones, Mexico, and we publish a free ranking of every dental clinic we can find in each city we cover. In Ho Chi Minh City that means 131 clinics, scored from their public digital footprint. No clinic can pay for its position, and the prices we publish are city-level estimates, never a quote from one clinic. The figure that counts is the written treatment plan a clinic gives you after examining you or your X-rays.
Compare clinics in the independent ranking of Ho Chi Minh City dental clinics and read the Ho Chi Minh City dentist guide for prices, districts and logistics.
