Planning a Dental Trip to Panama City: Flights, Days, Where to Stay and What to See
Quick answer: How to plan a dental trip to Panama City: direct flights to Tocumen, how many days and trips each treatment takes, the best districts to stay in, the rainy season and what to see around the Canal.

The short answer

Fly into Tocumen International Airport (PTY), the Copa Airlines hub, which has direct flights from many US cities and from Toronto and sits roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road from the central districts. Plan three to five days for crowns, about a week for veneers, and two trips three to six months apart for implants or All-on-4. Stay in Obarrio, Marbella, Punta Paitilla or San Francisco, close to the clinics. Typical prices run $1,200 to $1,800 USD for an implant and $400 to $650 for a crown.

Getting there

Tocumen is one of the best-connected airports in the Americas. Copa and several US airlines fly direct from many US cities, from Miami and Houston to the Northeast and the West, so many patients avoid a connection entirely. From Miami the flight is under three hours; from the Northeast, roughly five to five and a half. Toronto has nonstop service too; from other Canadian cities, connect in Toronto or a US hub. Schedules change, so check current options. Panama is on UTC-5 all year.

From the airport, take an authorised taxi or a ride app. The drive to the central districts takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes, considerably more at rush hour or in a rainy-season downpour.

All-on-4, per arch7–10 days, then about a week2$10,000 – $15,000$20,000 – $30,000

Prices are city-level estimates; your written plan sets days, trips and cost.

The order of things

  • Send recent X-rays and photos to two or three shortlisted clinics.
  • Compare the written plans: procedures, materials, days and total.
  • Choose the clinic and fix dates; only then buy flights.
  • Book a hotel near the clinic with a spare night at the end.
  • Check the current entry requirements for your passport and your government's travel advisory for Panama.

Where to stay

  • Obarrio and Marbella: the banking district, with business hotels, restaurants and many medical buildings. The most practical base.
  • Punta Paitilla and Punta Pacífica: waterfront towers with sea views, close to clinics and to the Cinta Costera promenade.
  • San Francisco and Coco del Mar: residential and calmer, with good restaurants and easy access to Parque Omar, a large park for recovery walks.
  • El Cangrejo: central, walkable and more affordable, with many apartment hotels.
  • Casco Viejo: boutique hotels in restored colonial buildings, rooftop bars and the city's best atmosphere. Lovely before or after treatment, livelier and farther from most clinics.

Weather and timing

Panama City is warm and humid all year. The dry season runs roughly from mid-December to April, with steady breezes and little rain, and it is the most popular time to visit. From about May to November, heavy afternoon showers are common but usually short. In the rainy season, book morning appointments, leave extra time for traffic and keep an umbrella handy. Treatment itself is unaffected by the season.

What to see between visits

The Miraflores Locks visitor centre, a short drive from downtown, lets you watch ships rise and fall through the Panama Canal from viewing platforms. Casco Viejo, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the ruins of Panamá Viejo, the city's original 16th-century settlement, has plazas, churches and restored mansions. The Cinta Costera waterfront and the Amador Causeway are good for walks and cycling with views of the skyline and the ships waiting to enter the Canal. The Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo explains how the isthmus changed the world's ecology. For nature, the rainforest of Soberanía National Park and the Canal town of Gamboa are within easy reach, and Taboga Island is a short ferry ride away.

Keep walking, hikes and boat trips for before surgery or for the crown trip; the days after surgery are for rest.

Safety in Panama City

The districts where most visitors stay and most clinics operate, such as Obarrio, Marbella, Punta Paitilla, San Francisco, El Cangrejo and the restored part of Casco Viejo, are busy, modern and well serviced. Like any capital, Panama City has areas you would not wander into, and petty theft happens. Read your government's current travel advisory for Panama before you book, use ride apps or taxis arranged by your hotel, keep your phone and valuables out of sight, and stick to well-lit, busy streets at night.

Paying in US dollars

Panama uses the US dollar as legal tender. The local balboa exists only as coins, at par with the dollar, and you will receive them in change alongside US coins. For a patient from the United States that removes a whole layer of uncertainty: the quote, the receipt and your card statement are all in the same currency, and there is no exchange rate to move between the day you accept the plan and the day you pay. Canadians still pay a conversion from Canadian dollars, but only once, at their own bank. Ask about card surcharges and pay per stage on multi-visit treatment rather than everything up front.

Before you arrive

Most clinics coordinate with foreign patients by WhatsApp or email. Confirm the exact address and building, whether they arrange airport pickup, your first appointment time and any instructions for sedation. Send your medical history and medication list in writing and ask for the total and payment schedule in the same thread.

Travelling with a companion

For implants under sedation or full-arch surgery, bring someone if you can; you will need help after sedation and in the first day or two. For crowns and veneers, travelling alone is fine.

Phones and packing

An eSIM or roaming plan keeps WhatsApp working. Pack light clothes, an umbrella in the rainy season, sunscreen, your dental records and medication list, and enough regular medicine for the trip.

Flying home

Ask your dentist when it is safe to fly; after surgery most clinics want a check first. Carry medication and the clinic's contact details in your hand luggage.

How Molar City can help

Molar City is an independent dental tourism platform, not a clinic. Since 2007 we have helped patients compare clinics, read treatment plans and organise trips, first in Los Algodones, Mexico, and now in destinations across the Americas and beyond. In Panama City we rank every clinic we can find, 157 at the last scan, from public signals such as reviews, website quality and listing completeness. No clinic can pay for its position. Send us your X-rays and the plans you receive, and we can help you compare them line by line, including against Mexico and Colombia.
