The short answer
For a dental visit, use the Del Rio International Bridge, which has a pedestrian walkway and lands near central Ciudad Acuña. Park on the Del Rio side, walk across, and carry a passport book, passport card or trusted traveler card to come back.
The crossings
- Del Rio International Bridge: the main crossing between the two cities, for cars and pedestrians. The usual choice for a clinic visit.
- Lake Amistad Dam crossing: a road crossing over the dam northwest of town, used mostly by drivers heading to the reservoir area. Not practical for a downtown clinic.
Parking
There is paid parking near the bridge on the Del Rio side. Keep valuables out of sight. Walking across avoids the vehicle line and the need for Mexican car insurance.
Documents
- No tourist permit is needed for short visits within the border zone.
- To return by land: passport book, passport card, SENTRI, NEXUS, Global Entry, an enhanced driver's license or a permanent resident card.
- Keep any prescription with the medicine and declare it at the port.
Wait times
The wait is on the way back. US Customs and Border Protection posts live wait times for Del Rio on its Border Wait Times website and app. Del Rio is usually much lighter than the big Texas crossings, but lines grow on weekend afternoons and around holidays. Book a morning appointment and aim to cross back by early afternoon.
Driving from San Antonio
Del Rio is about two and a half hours west of San Antonio on US-90, through Hondo, Uvalde and Brackettville. For an early appointment, drive the evening before and stay in a Del Rio hotel. Del Rio International Airport is small, so most visitors fly into San Antonio and drive.
A sample day
Park near the bridge around 8 a.m., walk across, reach the clinic for an early appointment, fill any prescription at a pharmacy near the bridge, and cross back after an early lunch. Winter visitors staying at Lake Amistad often fit the visit between days on the water.
Safety in Coahuila
Ciudad Acuña is in Coahuila, a state that has generally been calmer than Tamaulipas to the east. Read the current US State Department advisory for Coahuila before you go, because ratings change. Del Rio residents cross routinely for errands, meals and appointments, and follow the usual habits: daylight crossings, stay in the central area near the bridge and the clinic, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid long drives at night.
What you can bring back
Medicines prescribed by the dentist are generally allowed in personal-use quantities with the prescription; declare them. Check current US Customs and Border Protection guidance before you travel.
Tips from frequent crossers
- Carry small dollar bills for taxis and pharmacies.
- Confirm the appointment the day before and save the clinic's number.
- Have documents in hand before the inspection booth.
- If you will be sedated, bring someone to drive you home.
Compare clinics in the independent ranking of Ciudad Acuña dental clinics and read the Ciudad Acuña dentist guide for logistics.
If you drive across
If you need to drive, buy Mexican auto insurance before crossing, since US policies usually do not cover Mexico, and expect a longer line back than on foot. For a short visit within the border zone you do not need a temporary vehicle import permit.
