The short answer
For a dental visit, use Eagle Pass-Piedras Negras International Bridge No. 1, the downtown bridge, which has a pedestrian walkway and lands near central Piedras Negras. Park in downtown Eagle Pass, walk across, and carry a passport book, passport card or trusted traveler card for the return.
The two bridges
- Bridge No. 1: downtown, cars and pedestrians. The usual choice for a clinic visit.
- Bridge No. 2 (Camino Real): north of downtown, mainly for vehicles and commercial traffic.
Parking
There are paid lots near the foot of Bridge No. 1 in downtown Eagle Pass. Keep valuables out of sight. Walking across avoids the vehicle line and the need for Mexican car insurance.
Documents
- No tourist permit is needed for short visits within the border zone.
- To return by land you need a passport book, passport card, SENTRI, NEXUS, Global Entry, an enhanced driver's license or a permanent resident card.
- Keep any prescription with the medicine and declare it at the port.
Wait times
The wait is on the return. US Customs and Border Protection posts live wait times by port and lane on its Border Wait Times website and app. Eagle Pass is usually lighter than Laredo, but lines grow on weekend afternoons and around holidays. Book a morning appointment and aim to cross back by early afternoon.
Driving from San Antonio
The drive is about two and a half hours on US-57 through Pearsall and the brush country. For an early appointment, many patients drive down the evening before and stay in an Eagle Pass hotel. For a mid-morning appointment, leaving San Antonio around 6 a.m. works.
A sample day
Park downtown around 8 a.m., walk across, reach the clinic by 8:30, finish by late morning, have lunch on the Mexican side, perhaps nachos in the city where they were invented, and cross back early in the afternoon.
Safety in Coahuila
Piedras Negras is in Coahuila, a state that has generally been calmer than its neighbor Tamaulipas. Even so, read the current US State Department advisory for Coahuila before you travel, since the ratings change. The sensible habits are the same as anywhere on the border: cross in daylight, stay in the central area near the bridges and the clinic, keep valuables out of sight and avoid driving long distances at night. Eagle Pass residents cross routinely for shopping, meals and appointments.
What you can bring back
Medicines prescribed by the dentist are generally allowed in personal-use quantities with the prescription; declare them. Check current US Customs and Border Protection guidance before you go.
Tips from frequent crossers
- Carry small dollar bills for taxis and pharmacies.
- Confirm the appointment the day before and save the clinic's number.
- Have your documents in hand before the inspection booth.
Compare clinics in the independent ranking of Piedras Negras dental clinics and read the Piedras Negras dentist guide for logistics.
If you drive across
If you need to drive, buy Mexican auto insurance before crossing, since US policies usually do not cover Mexico, and expect a longer line coming back than on foot. Inside the border zone you do not need a temporary vehicle import permit for a short visit. For a clinic near downtown, walking remains the simplest plan.
