The short answer
A zirconia crown in Dubai typically costs about $500 to $900 USD, roughly AED 1,850 to 3,300, based on Molar City's city-level estimates. A root canal followed by a crown runs about $800 to $1,500 (AED 2,950 to 5,500). Crowns are the one major treatment where Dubai insurance is most likely to help, because a crown on a broken or root-treated tooth is often considered medically necessary. Check your policy and ask for pre-approval before you start.
When you actually need a crown
A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It is usually recommended when:
- A tooth has had a root canal, especially a back tooth that takes heavy chewing forces.
- A large filling has left too little tooth to support another filling.
- A tooth is cracked or broken.
- A crown is needed on top of an implant.
A crown is not usually the right answer for a healthy tooth that is simply discoloured or slightly misshapen; whitening, bonding or a veneer remove far less tooth. If a clinic proposes crowns on several healthy front teeth, ask for the reasoning in writing and consider a second opinion.
Materials
Zirconia
Very strong, metal-free and suitable for back teeth and bridges. Monolithic zirconia is the toughest; layered zirconia looks more natural at the front.
Lithium disilicate (E.max)
Highly aesthetic, often chosen for front teeth and premolars. Slightly less strong than zirconia for heavy grinders.
Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)
A metal core with porcelain on top. Durable and usually cheaper, but a grey line can show at the gum over time.
Full metal or gold
Very durable and gentle on opposing teeth, but rarely requested now for visible teeth.

Insurance and crowns: how it usually works
Insurance in Dubai is where crowns differ from veneers or implants. Many employer plans that cover basic dental will include a crown when it is clinically needed, such as after a root canal, subject to an annual limit and a co-payment. Others exclude crowns entirely or cover only a basic material. The practical steps:
- Find the dental section of your policy and note the annual cap and co-payment.
- Ask the clinic whether it is in your insurer's network and whether it bills the insurer directly.
- Ask the clinic to submit a pre-approval request with X-rays before treatment.
- If the insurer covers only a basic material, ask what the difference in price is for zirconia or E.max.
Your insurance: check the policy, not the brochure
Most Dubai residents have health insurance through their employer, and many assume it covers the dentist. Often it covers only part of it. A typical employer plan includes basic dental care — an examination, a cleaning, X-rays, fillings and sometimes simple extractions — with an annual limit and a co-payment. Implants, veneers, whitening and orthodontics are frequently excluded or capped, and crowns may be covered only when they are medically necessary. Plans differ a great deal, so check your policy: look for the dental benefit, the annual cap, the co-payment percentage, whether pre-approval is needed and whether your clinic is in the insurer's network. Ask the clinic's front desk to request pre-approval before treatment starts; it is a routine request and it avoids a surprise bill.
Reading a crown quote
A clear quote lists the crown material, the lab (in-house or external), whether a temporary crown is included, any build-up or post needed under the crown, and the number of visits. Typically a crown takes two visits about one to two weeks apart; clinics with in-house milling can sometimes do it in a day. Ask whether VAT is included where it applies, so you compare two quotes on the same basis.
How to check a dentist's licence
Dubai is a regulated market, and you can use that. Dentists and clinics in most of the emirate are licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), and you can look up a practitioner on the DHA's public register (the Sheryan portal) to confirm the licence is active and whether it is as a general dentist or a specialist. Clinics inside Dubai Healthcare City are licensed by that free zone's own authority instead, which also lists its licensed professionals. If you are paying specialist fees for an implant, root canal or orthodontic case, confirm the specialist title, not only the clinic's marketing.
Bridge or implant for a missing tooth?
If a tooth is already missing, you will often be offered two options: a three-unit bridge, which crowns the teeth on either side and suspends a false tooth between them, or an implant with a single crown. A bridge is usually quicker, finished in a couple of weeks, and its cost is roughly three crowns. It may also be easier to get partly covered by insurance. The downside is that the neighbouring teeth are cut down, which matters if they are healthy. An implant leaves the neighbours alone and costs more up front, about $1,500 to $2,600 in Dubai. Ask your dentist to price both and explain the trade-off for your mouth specifically.
Dubai or abroad for crowns?
For one or two crowns, staying in Dubai almost always makes sense: insurance may pay part, there is no flight, and if the crown loosens your dentist is nearby. For a large case, ten crowns or more, residents sometimes compare with Turkey, where crowns sit in a much lower price tier. If you do, compare the materials like for like and remember that a crown occasionally needs re-cementing. Our Istanbul guide covers that option.
Looking after a crown
A crown does not decay, but the tooth underneath can, at the margin where crown meets tooth. Brush and floss as usual, keep six-monthly cleanings, and wear a night guard if you grind. Most crowns last many years with good care, though no dentist can promise a fixed lifespan.
