The airport
Bahias de Huatulco International Airport (HUX) sits roughly 20 minutes from La Crucecita, the town centre where most of the 49 clinics Molar City tracks are located. It is a small airport, which in practice is an advantage: you are off the plane and in a taxi quickly, and there is no sprawling metropolitan drive between the runway and your appointment.
Getting there
From Canada
Canadian carriers run seasonal non-stop service to Huatulco during the winter months. This is the main reason the town has a substantial Canadian visitor population every season, and it is why December through April is the natural window for treatment. Outside those months you will connect.
From the United States
Most routings connect through Mexico City. Check current schedules for your own departure airport rather than trusting a list that ages: airline routes to secondary Mexican destinations change season by season.
From elsewhere in Mexico
Domestic connections through Mexico City are frequent and inexpensive. If you are combining Huatulco with Oaxaca City, the overland trip between them takes several hours on mountain roads, so most visitors fly.
When to go
December to April is the dry season, the season with direct Canadian flights and the months when the town is busiest. Book appointments and lodging earlier than you think you need to.
May to November is hotter, wetter and much quieter. Flights connect rather than fly direct, and hotel prices drop. If your treatment is short and you do not mind humidity during recovery, it is a reasonable trade.
Building the schedule around treatment
- Do not land and operate the same day. Give yourself a day. Travel is tiring, and the consultation deserves you awake.
- Leave a buffer before your return flight. Two clear days after the last procedure, minimum. Adjustments and check-ups are normal, not a sign something went wrong.
- Ask the clinic about flying after surgery. After extractions or implant placement there are real constraints, and the dentist who treated you is the person to set them. Do not plan around anything you read online, including this page.
- Send your records ahead. Recent x-rays and your medication list let the clinic plan before you arrive instead of losing a day to discovery.
Getting around once you are there
You do not need a rental car. La Crucecita is compact and walkable, taxis are inexpensive and plentiful, and the distances between the hotel zone at Tangolunda, the marina at Santa Cruz and the town centre are short. Clinics are concentrated in and around La Crucecita, so wherever you stay among the bays you are a short ride from your appointment.
What to bring
- Recent x-rays and any records from your dentist at home.
- A written list of medications, including bone medications and blood thinners.
- Your passport, and a card that works abroad. Ask the clinic in advance which payment methods they take and whether card payments carry a surcharge.
- Something soft to eat for the first day or two after surgery, or at least a plan for where to get it.
A realistic first-trip shape
Day one: arrive, settle, rest. Day two: consultation, imaging, written plan, decisions. Days three to five: the work. Days six and seven: follow-up, final check, and a buffer in case anything needs adjusting. Then fly home. For implant cases, expect this to be trip one of two, with the second trip three to six months later for the definitive restoration.
Before you book the ticket
Choose the clinic first. It is the common mistake in reverse order: people book flights for dates that suit the airline, then discover the clinic they wanted cannot fit them.
