The short answer
Most dental patients fly into Ponciano Arriaga International Airport (SLP), about twenty minutes from the city, which has had direct service from Dallas and Houston as well as connections through Mexico City and Monterrey. Stay in the historic center or in the modern districts to the west where many clinics are located. Plan four to seven days for crowns or veneers, and two separate trips for implants.
Flights
Routes and schedules change, so check current options. Historically, US airlines have connected San Luis Potosí with Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston, and Mexican carriers connect it with Mexico City, Monterrey and other domestic hubs. From the airport, use an authorized airport taxi or a ride-hailing app to reach your hotel.
Driving from Texas
San Luis Potosí lies on Federal Highway 57, the main north-south route from the Texas border through Saltillo toward Mexico City. From Laredo the drive takes most of a day via Monterrey and Saltillo. If you drive, use toll highways, travel only in daylight, carry Mexican auto insurance and obtain the temporary vehicle import permit required beyond the border zone.
Where to stay
- Historic center: colonial hotels around the Plaza de Armas and the Calzada de Guadalupe, walkable to restaurants and plazas. Good for a week-long stay with sightseeing between appointments.
- West side (Lomas and the business districts): modern hotels near shopping centers, medical buildings and many dental clinics. Convenient if your clinic is there.
Ask the clinic where it is located and book a hotel nearby, especially for the days after surgery.
How many days
| Treatment | Typical stay |
|---|---|
| Cleanings, fillings, one or two crowns | 2 – 4 days |
| Porcelain veneers | About a week |
| Implants | 2 – 4 days, then 3 – 5 days on a second trip |
| All-on-4 | About a week, then 4 – 7 days on a second trip |
Documents and money
US and Canadian citizens need a passport; no visa is required for tourism. Keep your entry record. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some pesos for taxis and small purchases. Ask the clinic whether it accepts dollars.
Between appointments
Walk the pink-stone historic center, visit the cathedral and the Templo del Carmen, and stroll the Calzada de Guadalupe to the Caja del Agua. On non-treatment days, the waterfalls of the Huasteca Potosína and the hillside town of Real de Catorce are popular trips, though avoid long excursions right after surgery.
Safety
Read the current US State Department advisory for the state of San Luis Potosí before you travel; ratings change and can differ by region. In the city, the historic center and the residential and commercial districts where most clinics sit are busy, ordinary places. Use authorized taxis or ride-hailing apps, travel between cities on toll highways in daylight, and keep the usual precautions you would in any large city.
What to pack
- Recent X-rays or scans, and a list of your medications.
- Soft snacks and a small cooler bag for the days after surgery.
- Layers: the city sits at about 1,860 meters, so evenings are cool.
Compare clinics in the independent ranking of San Luis Potosí dental clinics and read the San Luis Potosí dentist guide for logistics.
