The short answer
Cozumel is an island dental market shaped by two very different kinds of visitor. Molar City tracks 67 dental clinics here, most of them in San Miguel de Cozumel, the island town, within a short ride of both the cruise terminals and the airport. Published price ranges run $850 to $1,500 USD for a single implant, $300 to $550 for a zirconia crown and $8,000 to $13,000 for a full-arch All-on-4. What makes Cozumel unusual is not the pricing, which is standard for tourist-corridor Mexico, but the pace: clinics here are used to patients who have one day, speak English and have a boat to catch.
Two kinds of patient, two kinds of visit
Understanding which one you are decides everything else.
- The cruise passenger. You are in port for six to nine hours. That is enough for a cleaning, a filling, an exam with x-rays, or sometimes a crown if the clinic has a same-day milling unit. It is not enough for implant surgery. There is a separate guide on this site dedicated to exactly what fits in a port day.
- The week visitor. You flew in, or you came over on the ferry, and you are staying. This is the version where real treatment plans are possible, because the clinic can schedule you across several days and see you again before you leave.
Cozumel also has a third group that rarely gets mentioned: divers who come back every year. For them the island functions the way a hometown dentist does, with continuity across visits. If you are in that group, tell the clinic. It changes what they can plan for you.
What dental work costs in Cozumel
These are the ranges Molar City publishes for this price tier. They are ranges, not quotes. Your final number depends on imaging, bone condition, materials and how many teeth are involved.
| Treatment | Cozumel range (USD) |
|---|---|
| Single dental implant | $850 - $1,500 |
| Zirconia crown | $300 - $550 |
| Porcelain veneer | $350 - $600 |
| Root canal treatment | $200 - $400 |
| Full-arch All-on-4 | $8,000 - $13,000 |
Compared with typical pricing at home, patients report savings in the 50 to 70 percent band. Island logistics do not make treatment more expensive, but they do make your time more expensive, which is why small jobs rarely justify a dedicated trip.
Paying on the island
US dollars circulate freely in Cozumel because of the cruise traffic, and most clinics will quote you in them. That convenience has a cost: the exchange rate a business applies to a dollar price is usually worse than the bank rate you get paying in pesos or by card. Ask for the quote both ways before you decide. It is a five-second question that can move a crown by thirty or forty dollars.
Getting there
Two routes, and they serve different visits.
- By air. Cozumel International Airport (CZM) sits minutes from San Miguel. This is the route for a treatment week.
- By ferry. Passenger ferries run through the day from Playa del Carmen and take around 45 minutes. This is the route if you are staying on the mainland and coming over for appointments, or if you flew into Cancun.
If you are basing yourself on the Riviera Maya rather than the island, compare against the mainland before committing. Playa del Carmen and Cancun both have larger clinic counts and no boat in the schedule.
How to shortlist a clinic
Do this before you travel, not after you land.
- Ask for a written treatment plan with itemized costs, after an exam and imaging, not before.
- Ask which implant system and prosthetic materials they use, by brand.
- Ask who handles a complication once you are home, and what it costs.
- Ask for the treating dentist's credentials and specialty training.
- Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and whether it requires you to return to the island.
Molar City publishes a free ranking of Cozumel clinics built algorithmically from each clinic's digital footprint. No clinic can pay for its position. Use it to build a shortlist quickly, then do the verification above yourself: a ranking measures visibility and public presence, not what happens in an operatory.
When Cozumel is the wrong call
- You are in pain right now or have an active infection. Treat that at home first.
- You want implant surgery and your only window is a cruise port day.
- You need a wide choice of specialists for a complex case. The mainland has more clinics to compare.
- You cannot return for a second stage months later.
- Your physician at home has not cleared you for travel or surgery abroad.
Where to stay for a treatment week
San Miguel, the town, is the practical choice: the clinics are there, so are the pharmacies, and you can walk to dinner after a long appointment. The all-inclusive resorts spread along the coast are pleasant but put a taxi ride between you and every visit, which stops being charming by the third day. If you are recovering from surgery, proximity beats a sea view.
A note for divers
Cozumel exists on the world map because of its reef, and many patients here are divers first and dental tourists second. Two things are worth knowing. Do not schedule a dive the same day as an extraction or any surgical procedure, and tell your dentist that you dive before treatment is planned, because pressure changes and recent oral surgery do not mix well. Ask the clinic how many days to wait; follow their number, not the dive shop's.
What Molar City is, and is not
Molar City has been an independent dental tourism directory since 2007. We are not a dental clinic and we do not practice dentistry. We coordinate travel logistics and the communication between patient and clinic, and we publish the free ranking described above. Treatment decisions stay between you and the licensed dentist who examines you. For the full destination overview, see our Cozumel dental guide.
