Most dental destinations are built around visitors who come once, get treated and leave. Puerto Escondido is not. A large share of the patients here are residents: foreigners who live in town for part or all of the year, plus remote workers who stayed after the pandemic. That changes what the clinics are good at.
- Ongoing care rather than one-off procedures. Cleanings, fillings, crowns, follow-ups. The dentist expects to see you again in six months, not once in a lifetime.

Where the clinics are
Most sit in the town centre and in La Rinconada, the area where much of the foreign community lives. Both are a short taxi or scooter ride from almost anywhere in town, and from the airport it is a matter of minutes. You will not need a rental car.
Getting here, and getting around
Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) sits a few minutes from town, which is unusual: for most destinations the airport transfer is the first hurdle, and here it is a short taxi ride. Connections run through Mexico City and Oaxaca City, and the route through the capital is the most reliable from almost anywhere abroad. There is also a road from Oaxaca City through the sierra, which is spectacular and slow; most people fly it instead.
Once you are here, the town is small enough that taxis and scooters cover everything. Colectivos run the main road for a few pesos. You will not need a rental car for dental appointments, and parking in the centre is not worth the trouble.
One caution worth stating plainly: the beaches here, Zicatela in particular, have powerful surf and strong currents. It is a world-class wave precisely because it is not a gentle one. If you are recovering from oral surgery, swimming in heavy water is a bad idea for reasons that have nothing to do with your teeth.
Who this town suits
It suits people already on this coast: residents, long-stay visitors, surfers who spend a season here, and anyone who wants routine dental work done well without resort pricing. It also suits patients coming specifically for a crown, veneers or a cleaning, where the treatment is straightforward and the town itself is the reason to come.
It is the wrong choice if you need a large multi-specialist case, if you need emergency treatment this week, or if you cannot come back for a second visit. For a complex full-arch case, compare against Oaxaca City, which has 189 clinics and is a short flight or a mountain drive inland.
When to come
November through April is the dry season and the stretch when the foreign community is at its largest. It is comfortable, everything is open, and it is also the busiest period, so appointments and lodging both need booking further ahead than you would expect for a town this size.
May through October is the rainy season: hotter, humid, with afternoon storms and a much emptier town. Prices drop and appointments are easy to get. The trade-off is that some businesses close for part of it, and September and October sit inside the Pacific hurricane season, which is worth checking against your travel dates if you are planning anything that cannot be moved.
If your treatment needs several visits in one week, the quiet season is genuinely easier to schedule. If you want the town at its best and do not mind booking early, come in winter.
