The short answer
A zirconia crown in Panama City typically costs $400 to $650 USD, compared with about $1,200 to $1,800 in the United States. A root canal plus crown usually runs $600 to $1,000. One or two crowns often fit in three to five days; larger cases take about a week. For patients who need a few crowns and want the shortest, simplest trip, Panama's nonstop flights and dollar pricing are a real draw.
When a crown is the right answer
A crown covers the whole visible tooth. It is recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a filling, when an old large filling has cracked, after most root canals on back teeth, to anchor a bridge and on top of implants. Because a crown requires shaping the tooth all round, a good dentist explains why a filling or partial onlay would not do. If several crowns are proposed, ask for the reason for each.

Crown materials
- Monolithic zirconia: very strong, the usual choice for molars and grinders, and far more natural-looking than early versions.
- Layered zirconia: a zirconia core with porcelain outside for front teeth; better appearance, small risk of chipping.
- Lithium disilicate (E.max): excellent appearance for front teeth and many premolars.
- Porcelain fused to metal: durable and economical, though a grey line may show at the gum over time.
Why crown prices vary
Two "zirconia crowns" can differ a lot. A monolithic crown milled in-house is usually the most economical; a layered crown or hand-finished lithium disilicate from a specialist laboratory costs more and is chosen for visible teeth. Digital scanning, try-ins and temporaries also move the price. Ask every clinic the same questions so you compare like with like.
Root canals before crowns
A tooth with an infected or dying nerve needs root canal treatment first. Molars with narrow or curved canals are where an endodontist's skill makes a difference. Ask who will do the root canal, whether a post or core build-up is needed, and whether everything is included in the quote. A root canal usually adds one or two visits.
How long it takes
A crown needs at least two appointments: preparation with a scan or impression, then fitting. With an outside laboratory there are typically two to four working days between them; in-house milling can sometimes deliver in a day or two. For several front crowns, where shade and shape need a try-in, plan a week. Keep a spare day before your flight for bite adjustments.
Crowns, bridges and implants
For a missing tooth, the usual choice is a bridge or an implant. A bridge uses crowns on the neighbouring teeth to hold a false tooth; it fits in one trip and avoids surgery, but means shaping two teeth that may be healthy. An implant spares the neighbours but takes two trips and costs more up front. Ask the dentist to price both and explain which suits your case.
What the written quote should state
- Each tooth by number, the treatment and the material.
- Whether root canals, posts, build-ups and temporaries are included.
- The laboratory and how many days it needs.
- The number of visits and the total in dollars, with the payment schedule.
- What happens if a crown does not fit or comes loose later.
Choosing a clinic
Most clinics in our independent ranking of Panama City dental clinics make crowns. The differences are the laboratory, the materials and the care taken with the fit at the gum line. Prefer clinics that use digital scans or careful impressions, show photos of similar work and have reviews mentioning crowns.
Is Panama the right place for crowns?
For a single crown, the saving over the US is real but modest after flights, so Panama makes most sense if you are already visiting or need several crowns at once. For a larger case, the dollars saved add up, and the short, direct trip keeps the hassle low. If price is all that matters, compare against Mexico and Colombia too.
Questions to ask before you book
- Why does this tooth need a crown rather than a filling or onlay?
- Which material do you recommend for this tooth, and why?
- Will you take a digital scan or a traditional impression?
- Who does the root canal, if one is needed?
- How will the bite be checked before I fly home?
Back home
Keep tooth numbers, materials and laboratory details for your dentist. If the bite feels high, tell the clinic before you fly; it takes minutes to adjust. Floss carefully at the crown edge, where new decay most often starts.
Paying in US dollars
Panama uses the US dollar as legal tender. The local balboa exists only as coins, at par with the dollar, and you will receive them in change alongside US coins. For a patient from the United States that removes a whole layer of uncertainty: the quote, the receipt and your card statement are all in the same currency, and there is no exchange rate to move between the day you accept the plan and the day you pay. Canadians still pay a conversion from Canadian dollars, but only once, at their own bank. Ask about card surcharges and pay per stage on multi-visit treatment rather than everything up front.

How Molar City can help
Molar City is an independent dental tourism platform, not a clinic. Since 2007 we have helped patients compare clinics, read treatment plans and organise trips, first in Los Algodones, Mexico, and now in destinations across the Americas and beyond. In Panama City we rank every clinic we can find, 157 at the last scan, from public signals such as reviews, website quality and listing completeness. No clinic can pay for its position. Send us your X-rays and the plans you receive, and we can help you compare them line by line, including against Mexico and Colombia.
