The short answer
Fly into Aguascalientes International Airport (AGU), about twenty minutes from the center, or into Del Bajío International Airport (BJX) near León, about two hours away with more US routes. Stay in the historic center or near your clinic. Plan four to seven days for crowns or veneers and two trips for implants.
Flights
Aguascalientes has had direct flights from several US cities, including Dallas and Houston, as well as domestic connections through Mexico City, Monterrey and Tijuana. León's airport offers a wider choice of US non-stops. Routes change, so check current schedules. From either airport, use an authorized taxi, a ride-hailing app or a pre-arranged transfer; the clinic can often recommend one.
Driving
From the Texas border, the city is a long day's drive south via Monterrey or Saltillo and Zacatecas. If you drive, use toll highways, travel in daylight, carry Mexican auto insurance and obtain the temporary vehicle import permit required outside the border zone. For most patients, flying is simpler.
Where to stay
- Historic center: hotels around the Plaza de la Patria and the Jardín de San Marcos, walkable to restaurants, museums and plazas.
- North side: modern hotels near shopping centers and medical buildings, convenient if your clinic is there.
For surgery days, staying close to the clinic makes follow-up visits easier.
Mind the fair dates
Every spring, roughly from mid-April to mid-May, the city hosts the Feria Nacional de San Marcos, one of the largest fairs in Mexico. Hotels fill up and prices rise for those weeks. It can be a fun time to visit, but if your goal is a calm recovery, book treatment outside the fair or reserve your hotel well ahead.
How many days
| Treatment | Typical stay |
|---|---|
| Cleanings, fillings, one or two crowns | 2 – 4 days |
| Porcelain veneers | About a week |
| Implants | 2 – 4 days, then 3 – 5 days on a second trip |
| All-on-4 | About a week, then 4 – 7 days on a second trip |
Documents and money
US and Canadian citizens need a passport; no visa is required for tourism. Cards are widely accepted; carry some pesos for taxis and small purchases.
Between appointments
Walk the Plaza de la Patria and the Jardín de San Marcos, see the murals in the Palacio de Gobierno and visit the José Guadalupe Posada museum. The city's name means "hot waters", and thermal baths and spas are a relaxing way to fill a free afternoon, though check with your dentist before hot baths right after surgery.
Safety
Aguascalientes has long been regarded as one of the calmer states in Mexico, and the city is known for being orderly and easy to get around. Still, read the current US State Department advisory before you travel, use authorized taxis or ride-hailing apps, and keep the ordinary precautions you would take in any city of a million people.
What to pack
- Recent X-rays or scans and a list of your medications.
- Soft snacks for the days after surgery.
- A light jacket: at about 1,880 meters, evenings are cool much of the year.
