The short answer
Fly into Culiacán International Airport (CUL), a short drive from the city, usually with a connection through Tijuana, Mexico City or Guadalajara; at times there have also been direct flights from the US. Stay near your clinic or with family. Plan four to seven days for crowns or veneers and two stages for implants. Read the current US advisory for Sinaloa before you decide to go.
Flights
Routes change, so check current options. Many travelers from California use the cross-border terminal into Tijuana's airport and connect to Culiacán on a domestic flight. From the airport, use a taxi or a ride arranged by your hotel, clinic or family rather than hailing one on the street.
By road
Culiacán lies on Federal Highway 15, the Pacific corridor from Nogales through Hermosillo and Los Mochis down to Mazatlán. It is a very long drive from the US border. If you drive, use toll highways, travel only in daylight, carry Mexican auto insurance and obtain the temporary vehicle import permit required outside the border zone.
Where to stay
- Commercial districts: modern hotels near shopping centers and medical buildings, where many dental clinics are located.
- Near the malecón: hotels close to the riverside promenade and green areas, pleasant for evening walks.
- With family: many patients stay with relatives, which also helps during recovery.
How many days
| Treatment | Typical stay |
|---|---|
| Cleanings, fillings, one or two crowns | 2 – 4 days |
| Porcelain veneers | About a week |
| Implants | 2 – 4 days, then 3 – 5 days on a second visit |
| All-on-4 | About a week, then 4 – 7 days on a second visit |
Climate
Culiacán is hot for much of the year and very hot and humid in summer. The most comfortable months are roughly November to March. After treatment, rest indoors, drink plenty of water and avoid long outings in the midday heat.
Documents and money
US and Canadian citizens need a passport; no visa is required for tourism. Cards are widely accepted; carry pesos for small purchases.
Safety: the honest version
Sinaloa has carried the US State Department's highest travel advisory level, "Do Not Travel", for years, and the advisory places restrictions on travel by US government employees. Read the current advisory before deciding. Culiacán is a large working city where daily life goes on, and most people who travel there for dental care already have family or business in the city. If you go, follow local advice: travel during the day, use taxis or rides arranged by your hotel or clinic, stay in the commercial and residential districts where clinics are, and avoid driving between cities at night. If you have no ties to Culiacán, Mazatlán, two and a half hours south on the coast, is a more common choice for visitors.
Between appointments
The riverside malecón, the cathedral in the center and the Jardín Botánico, with its contemporary art installations among the plants, are quiet places to spend a free afternoon. Sinaloa's food is famous, but stick to soft dishes for the first days after treatment.
