The short answer
Most dental patients fly into Monterrey International Airport (MTY), which has many US connections, and transfer about an hour west to Saltillo. Saltillo also has a small airport with limited domestic service. From Laredo, the drive takes roughly four hours by toll highway. Plan four to seven days for crowns or veneers and two trips for implants.
Flights
Monterrey is one of Mexico's busiest airports, with direct flights from Texas and other US cities. From the airport, a pre-arranged transfer or ride-hailing app reaches Saltillo in about an hour; many clinics can recommend a driver. Saltillo's own airport, Plan de Guadalupe, mostly has domestic connections. Check current routes before booking.
Driving from Texas
From Laredo, the usual route is the toll highway south through Monterrey and then west to Saltillo, about four hours. You need Mexican auto insurance and, because Saltillo is beyond the border zone, a temporary vehicle import permit. Drive only in daylight and use toll roads.
Where to stay
- Historic center: hotels near the cathedral and the Plaza de Armas, walkable to restaurants and museums.
- North and east sides: modern business hotels along the main boulevards, close to shopping centers, medical buildings and many clinics.
Ask where your clinic is and stay nearby for surgery days.
How many days
| Treatment | Typical stay |
|---|---|
| Cleanings, fillings, one or two crowns | 2 – 4 days |
| Porcelain veneers | About a week |
| Implants | 2 – 4 days, then 3 – 5 days on a second trip |
| All-on-4 | About a week, then 4 – 7 days on a second trip |
Documents and money
US and Canadian citizens need a passport; no visa is required for tourism. Cards are widely accepted; carry some pesos for taxis and small purchases.
Between appointments
See the cathedral and the historic center, shop for a hand-woven sarape, and spend a morning at the Museo del Desierto with its dinosaur skeletons. Monterrey's Macroplaza and Fundidora Park are an easy day trip on non-treatment days.
Safety
Saltillo is the capital of Coahuila, a state that has generally been calmer than its neighbors in recent years. Read the current US State Department advisory for Coahuila before you travel, since ratings change. In the city, use authorized taxis or ride-hailing apps, drive toll highways in daylight if you come by road, and take the precautions you would in any large city.
Recovering in Saltillo
Saltillo sits at about 1,600 meters in a dry valley ringed by the Sierra de Zapalinamé, so days are often sunny and evenings cool, which makes the rest days after treatment comfortable. Hotels near the clinics are quiet, distances are short and soft-food options are easy to find, from soups to the city's traditional pan de pulque. Avoid long excursions on the first days after surgery.
What to pack
- Recent X-rays or scans and a list of your medications.
- Soft snacks for the days after surgery.
- Sunscreen and a light jacket for the dry, cool evenings.
