The route
Most international patients treating in Toluca fly into Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and travel west by motorway — about an hour, depending on the time of day you set out. Toluca International (TLC) is far closer to the city but mainly handles domestic routes, so it is useful if you are connecting from elsewhere in Mexico rather than arriving from abroad.
How to cover the last hour
- Private transfer. The simplest option, and worth it on the day you arrive with luggage. Many clinics that treat international patients will arrange it; ask when you book the appointment.
- Motorway coach. Frequent, comfortable and inexpensive services run the corridor. Good if you travel light.
- Rental car. Only if you plan to explore the region. For treatment alone, a car is more trouble than help: taxis and ride apps inside Toluca are cheap and parking in the centre is awkward.
Whichever you choose, avoid arriving into MEX late at night and planning to travel straight on. Land in the morning or afternoon, transfer with daylight, sleep, then start treatment the next day.
How many days to book
Depends entirely on the work. Any clinic giving you a day count before seeing imaging is guessing:
- Cleaning, fillings, a crown: two to four days including a buffer.
- Single implant, placement stage: three to five days, with a review appointment before you fly.
- Full arch (All-on-4), surgical trip: four to seven days, then a second trip after healing.
- Veneers: five to seven days, since preparation, try-in and fitting are separate steps.
Add one buffer day at the end, always. Adjustments are normal and you do not want to choose between a comfortable bite and a boarding gate.
Inside Toluca
The city is compact and clinics cluster between the historic centre and Metepec, which is the practical advantage over treating in the capital. Taxis and ride apps move you between appointments in minutes. Two appointments in one day is realistic here; in Mexico City it rarely is.

Count flights, the transfer both ways, lodging for the treatment days and — for most implant cases — a second trip months later. That arithmetic decides whether the journey makes sense. For routine work close to the US border, it usually does not. For implants, veneers across the smile line or a full arch, it usually does.
Before you fly: a short checklist
- Get the treatment plan in writing before travelling, not on arrival.
- Bring any recent X-rays or CBCT scans; it can save an imaging fee and speeds up planning.
- Bring a written list of medications and conditions. Anticoagulants and bisphosphonates change surgical planning.
- Mention the altitude to your own doctor if you have a heart or lung condition — Toluca sits at roughly 2,660 metres.
- Confirm how the clinic takes payment and in which currency. Card fees and exchange spreads matter on a full-arch case.
- Ask who to contact if something hurts at 9pm on a Sunday.
